Perry Ellis (1940-1986) is considered one of the original American designers. Known for his sportswear, the designer was known for his "playful" almost whimsical look. Relaxed and comfortable, Perry Ellis clothes has an "American feeling" whether main street or urban.
When he was still alive, Perry Ellis was quoted saying, "Always provide the clothes needed for daily life." With that philosophy, Perry Ellis designs has always been wearable and commercially successful.
Since Ellis' death, the company had changed hands several times. Owned originally by Manhattan Industries, it was taken over by Salant. A few years later, Salant filed bankruptcy. In January 1999, Miami-based Supreme International acquired the Perry Ellis brand.
Skipping New York for the Fall 2000 menswear shows, Supreme International relaunched the brand at the Miami Beach Fashion Show. Fall 2002 show marked Perry Ellis' return to the New York runway.
